What does it mean that we are His temple? 

We were made specifically for the purpose of housing the Spirit of the living God within. Giving our lives to Christ is accepting his sacrifice and redemption in His death on the cross and resurrection on the third day. This is a reconciliation of the original design of full communion between God and man. Sin separated us, Jesus restored us. The plan was always for His Spirit to dwell in us, for us to be His temple. As the creator of all creators, God is very specific about the way He creates and He doesn't make mistakes. Simply put, you were made exactly how the Lord intended and He fashioned you in a manner in which He saw as good and desires to indwell. Paul in 1 Corinthians is speaking about divisions in the church in Corinth and tells the people that the foundation is and will always be Jesus. Then he reminds them that their reality is one of a Holy place of the Lord, for Him to dwell within. Similarly to Peter in 1 Peter 2:9 where he speaks to a mixed racial crowd and affirms their unity in Christ. Declaring over them "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession," and encouraging them in this reality to declare and proclaim of God and how He has delivered them from darkness and called them to light. In the same way today, we are graced with the same foundation and identities as the early church. Jesus Christ is still the foundation and we are His dwelling place, His Temple, His possession, HIS PROPERTY!

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 "Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? if anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple."

1 Corinthians 3:9 "for we are God's fellow workers. You are God's field, God's building,"

1 Peter 2:9 "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
